IN MEMORY OF RODGER STERLING
(click on image for larger photo)

Tribute by Carol Washburn

Rodger was one of a kind; an absolute treasure to know. As a dedicated newspaper man and leader of the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce in 1970 and again in 1974, he always cared about his community and daily reminded us of our rich history of people and places and their stories. While he never wrote the book we hoped for about Calabasas and the Valley, the papers of the Valley News are a rich archive of our lives that Rodger created.

As a publisher and one of the first on the street to get the scoop, he loved to mix his news with humor and history by sprinkling jokes and vintage photos in his pages to remind his readers of their humanity, foibles and connections to their neighbors. Rodger will be especially missed by the past Presidents and Chairmen of the Board who met annually to select the Bill Van Gieson Award winner. In the photo above they are shown last January with Rodger shown seated in the middle.
